  • Even before I throw this plugin on, I like to use the clip gain as my first option for fixing the Ess’s and it compliments the Waves DeEsser nicely.
  • It’s the last line of defense in handling the sibilance. I like to use a combination of techniques to handle the Ess’s and this is sort of like a limiter for the ess’s. I tend not to use this plugin at face value like most people would. I’m not sure but if you know what you are doing, this Waves DeEsser works really well. I think maybe because the sound of the plugin is a kin to the L-1 and the RComp that I feel comfortable with it.

This is one of the earliest plugin DeEssers to see the light of day and for some reason it just sounds good to me. There are plenty of other companies out there offering some great sounding plugins. Remember that Waves is just one company that offers great tools for mixing. I use plugins from other companies like Izotope, Slate and even the good old stock plugins from Avid. I really try to keep things simple so I’m focused more on the music and less on the gear.īefore I get into the top 5 Waves plugins I use, I would mention that I don’t only use Waves Audio products in my mixes. Most, if not all of them, have a very limited amount of controls, which really talks to my mixing style. Some of these Waves plugins obviously get used more than others but I would say a good portion of my sound comes from these 5 (besides my ears of course).Īnother interesting thing to mention is that all of the plugins, listed in this article, are fairly simple to use. At this point I’m more than used to how they sound so they are hard to replace. These plugins make a difference in my mixes and just seem to work whenever I put them on a track. These 5 plugins I would say get used on at least 95% of my mixes. Yeah, they're not 'sexy'.but they work.įWIW, I did a whole lot of hair pulling research this past holiday season and wound up with Waves NLS, Slate VCC, Softube Mix Bundle, McDSP G-Console as well as IK's T-Racks Classic.I was going through my Waves plugin library the other day and I was surprised because there’s really only a handful that I use most of the time. Like the other poster said, don't knock Logics own plugs. eq's, effects which are old 'holy grail' analog emulations) and add them to your rack as you feel like.

Basically you buy a version of T-Racks, or even download the free version which comes with a free classic plug, and then you can start buying their other audio plugs (large selection of compressor. Their Racks have all been upgraded to 64bits and its a inexpensive entry into their new Custom Shop system. You can buy their 'Classic' suite for $80. Oh yeah, check out IK Multimedia's T-Racks stuff. I think the other two are something like 40 bucks each. Sonimus's Statson, Sweet Tone and SonEQ (that ones free) for example get high marks it seems. Searching Gearslutz or KVR or simply googling something like 'best inexpensive audio daw plugins' for example will list a bunch of topics on those sites

However, ghood news is is that there are a whole bunch of small software developers that have the same old analog EQ's, compressors, tape, console, etc emulations that people say are very good and very inexpensive. There is Slate stuff as you mention, but again, I'm looking at the current dealer prices and folks where able to buy this stuff way less than now unfortunately for you however sign up to some of these online plugin dealers because there's always some kind of sales happening for something. and probably one of the less expensive entry to their line.

McDSP G Console Compact will give you both a number of compressor and EQ emulations which is less expensive than the full console but same quality with less parameters I believe. Waves REDD is on sale right now, that'd get your feet wet as far as the old analog, in this case, 'Abbey Road Studio Console' emulation if you want the big 'name brand' thing. I suggest getting an account with a place called AudioDeluxe (its free) and make sure you check to have them email it their deal specials. I got some Waves, Slate, Softube, McDSP plugs while they were going for like around 80% off. Absolutely ridiculous discounts (to suck you in, lol) I never bought any third party audio plugs till this past holiday season.
